Specifically, many property and business owners need to review their Capital Gains Tax situation and evaluate their exit strategies and succession options taking into account recent UK Budget announcements.

Leaving the UK and becoming non-resident for tax purposes is also an increasingly popular consideration.

Gary Smith - Trust Assist

ImageGary Smith is a director of Trust Assist, a UK- based product design company specialising in Inheritance Tax schemes. Gary’s co-director, Nick Chadwick, will be known to many of you for his work in the inheritance tax arena. Trust Assist has some £500m invested in their schemes and is currently working with Isle of Man Assurance (IOMA) on four inheritance tax schemes, all of which will be covered on 15 May. Gary has been involved in the trust market for 18 years and talks all over the country to legal and accountancy firms in conjunction with IFA partners. He is a director of three other businesses and is involved as a trustee for 2 local charities.

Gary will be talking about the range of offshore inheritance tax planning tools offered by IOMA.  These include a fully flexible product designed to adapt to the client’s changing circumstances and therefore cut through any objections a client may have to IHT planning; with this product, monies can be transferred to beneficiaries while the client is still alive.  He will also talk about estate transfer using a Bare Trust to generate an income defined by the client (up to 10% per annum, plus/minus growth); there is tax efficient distribution of the policy benefits on the client's death.  Finally, Gary will also explain IOMA's flexible inheritor plan which aims to increase the client’s return on cash while keeping it in a cash environment and save the client some IHT immediately (via a discount) and a further amount after seven years.

David has over 20 years’ experience in financial services, dealing primarily with personal and corporate pension planning.  He qualified as independent financial adviser (IFA) 12 years ago and since then has run his own IFA business and set up the corporate division of a national IFA company.

David will be talking about the creative use of pension products and the interpretation of legislation to improve clients’ financial position and reduce their tax burden. He will also show you how your clients can make large pension payments tax efficiently, how to structure salaries in the most tax effective way and how to implement post-retirement planning to increase tax-free cash and improve death benefits.

Benefits summary:

  • a material part of the trust payments is a tax-free return of capital;
  • the remainder of each payment is taxable but may be offset by the  recipient’s annual CGT allowance;
  • thereafter it is taxed at 18% as opposed to 40%;
  • the reduction in tax, enables the investor to enjoy either a greater after tax return, or leave a greater legacy;

and may enable the recipient to make greater use of their age allowance.
